A few thoughts about comfort zones (and why I moved from NYC to Berlin). Comfort zones imply cozy warmth and laziness. However, the most dangerous (and, I would argue, common) comfort zones are the ones where we are busy, maybe even stressed. I was in my mid-thirties. I was working very hard, fulfilled but exhausted. Eventually I realised that the mighty river I was swimming in might be flowing sideways. Being busy is a great excuse for not asking yourself where you are going. Moving to another continent in my twenties had been hard, expensive, and the most inspiring thing I had ever done, and now it was time to shake things up again. After much soul-searching and hesitation, my wife and I agreed that the only place that we could imagine moving to would be Berlin. In New York, I learned to be a professional, but I sensed that in order to grow I needed to loosen up. Berlin makes it easy to worry less about the feasibility of an idea. Moving here felt like going back to art school.
