It’s #worldlizardday and this is one of my fav lizard species! Meet the Asian water monitor - 2nd largest species in the world, to the Komodo Dragon. To me these big monitor lizards are nature’s version of Godzilla! They’re muscle bound roving predators with tail whips, sharp claws & devastating teeth backed by a significant bite force. But many people don’t realize they’re also some of the smartest reptiles on the planet that can problem solve and not just function on instinct. Many of my favorite wildlife encounters involve these special lizards and in my book #worldwildvet I share some of these exciting moments. Someone was a veryyyy good boy for his puppy vaccine❗️ He’s licking his lips bc I distracted him with chicken-flavored baby food while administering his DHPP and trust me - the power of distraction is very real ??‍⚕️! The primary vaccine we give young puppies is called DHPP and protects them agains Distemper virus, Hepatitis virus (aka an Adenovirus), Parainfluenza virus, and Parvo virus. We start these around 6-8 weeks and “boost” it (aka give it again) every 3-4 weeks thru 17-18 weeks of age. The reason we have to repeat this vaccine so often at this age is because of ‘maternal immunity’. These maternal antibodies are passed in the milk and can interfere with the vaccine until about 17-18 weeks of age. FYI we then give the rabies vaccine at this time (legally varies state to state) and then both vaccines at 1 year and then every 3 years for life. It’s that easy ??. Some pets need additional vaccines such as CIV (canine influenza virus), Bordetella (a bacterial cause of ‘kennel cough’), or leptospirosis (a gnarly bacteria found in fresh waters) for example. These other vaccines are recommended based on geographic location and social activity i.e. boarding or daycare. There’s also a rattlesnake vaccine but that has variable efficacy depending on what species is/are native to your area and either way a rattlesnake bite is ALWAYS a medical emergency and requires intensive veterinary intervention. If you have questions about vaccines your best option is to consult with your local veterinarian ??‍⚕️?. If you noticed the cast - this cute kiddo had a minor tibial fracture treated by another vet and is recovering very well ??. #puppy #vaccines #vaccinateyourpets ? @conejovet

The virginia opossum is one of North America's most misunderstood and underappreciated native wild animals. Did you know that they're our continent's only native marsupial? Or that ticks make up a large part of their diet and therefore they help reduce tick borne diseases⁉️ On top of their ecological significance, opossums have some of the strangest reproductive traits in nature. #DYK the male's sperm travel in pairs through sperm maturation and only separate immediately before fertilization of females eggs? And on average females have 13 teats! Not many mammalians have an odd number of teats lol. Back to males, FYI their 'frank' is BEHIND their 'beans' ??. And let's clarify a myth: Opposed to what many people think, opossums are one of the LAST animals to carry/spread rabies. Their lower body temperature is not a conducive host for the rabies virus and it's extremely rare for them to have it or carry it. These marsupials have an undeniably 'unique' look to them but I find them adorable and I want everyone to know that you have no reason to fear opossums and instead you should be thankful for them! @conejovet #virginiaopossum #northamerica #native #wildlife

When it comes to working with injured, orphaned or confiscated animals in a wildlife rescue setting the release is one of the most rewarding aspects ?? Getting healthy, release-able animals back into the wild where they belong is what it's all about and the @kiwildlifepark has been doing an amazing job at rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing hundreds of koalas back into the wild on Kangaroo Island ??. KI lost about 50% of their island's land & habitat following the fires from late 2019/early 2020. 80-90+% of the koala population was decimated along with tons of other native wildlife. I'm thankful to be a small part of this and for the people in the trenches helping the island's wildlife everyday ?? #australiafires #wildlife #rescue #conservation

Pokin a duck bc I give a fk ?? This is a wildlife patient and I’m giving an intramuscular medication injection. Ducks and most birds have very developed pectoral muscles and these are the primary muscles involved in flight/lift and also easily accessible for IM injections. Also, I often get asked about different animals as pets, including ducks... Ducks are obvi super cute and fun but listen — they’re a BIG mess. Prob one of the messiest animals to have as a pet. They eat a lot and poo everywhereeee. They need lots of freshwater, not only to swim in, but they like to eat and poo in their water so daily and often multi-daily water changes are necessary. Unless you have a big self-sustaining pond, plz think twice before getting or gifting a pet duck ??‍⚕️? #duckinA @conejovet

Regarding exotics/wildlife patients I find that snakes tend to be some of the easiest to work with. Some snakes are actively defensive but with a little patience and feeling them out 9/10 snakes have very workable temperaments. And the snake-loving side of me can't not mention the ecological significance of snakes! Snakes are crucial for controlling populations of their prey species, often rodents. Snakes are also important food sources for many predators including certain birds of prey and even other snakes! FYI king snakes and king cobras feed almost entirely on other snakes. People around the world shoot themselves in the foot by fear-driven indiscriminate killing of snakes. This practice is complete ignorance against a misunderstood animal so educating others about the value of snakes is the start to understanding them and hopefully, eventually appreciating & preserving them. #?❤️?s @conejovet
